New bars like the Brooklyn Taphouse that have a vegan corner on their menu. It's nice to have Bratwurst with beer, just the store-brought variety, but an A for effort all around. Check out another Thursday night bar with vegan eats at Halyards.
Like any good New Yorker who has worked in the west village for the past 8 years, I know Melvin. Melvin Major is the juicer extraordinaire at Lifethyme. Now his good vibes juicing can be found at Miss Lily's. It's amazing to see Melvin's Juice Box in this bright new place, surrounded by happy juice swillers.
I had the curry vegetables and rice with a side of sweet & dandy juice. If you go for dinner they have a vegan Bushman plate.

Ginersnap's Organic takes the raw standard and presents it in a fresh and elegant way. I especially liked the spacious cafe with high ceilings and open windows. We need our air and light in January. The pizza: walnut hemp seed crust, sundried tomato, garlic kate, and brazil nut ricotta perfect, light, and lemony.

Lacinato-a love story

Dear Lacinato Kale, or Dinosaur Kale, or Brassica Oleraca,

Collards can be too chewy, regular kale too curly, swiss chard too slippery, mustard greens too yucky (there, I admit it). Lacinato, you are practically sweet and the prettiest shade of green. Maybe it's because you are Italian, but all I know is, you are the green for me.

The Day Trippers

2012 is off to a sweet start! Pedal to the metal KZ and I hit the high road to Philadelphia. First, we stopped at Dun-well Donuts-right here in Bushwick. I never thought I'd see the day when you could get a freshly baked donut at 8AM in a charming spacious establishment. These guys are good at what they do and were kind enough to let our curious cameras capture the racks.

I had The Elvis-peanut butter and banana frosting. I like that there was no sweet overkill.
1st stop in Philly, Memphis Taproom. A traditional place with a standout vegan option: The Vegan Rooster. Their blood sausage was light, cardamom hinted, and grain filled. The coconut bacon was also a unique addition. While I enjoyed it, the sheer smokiness of it was a bit intense.
Then it was off to Bethlehem for Vegan Treats. VT are sold throughout the city, so it was neat to see their roots. Their display case was a sight for sore eyes, beautiful bedazzled little cakes in so many colors and combinations.
I opted for the caramel pecan cheesecake and cannoli. Sweet tooth fixed for a while I hope.

Dinner at Vedge, from the same people that brought us Horizons. Was it really 3 years ago that we went there?
I'm sorry to say that my camera just doesn't hold up in that romantic lighting. This was one of my many little plates, each one a powerhouse of flavor. Will words suffice?

Austin Redux

There's nothing like your first meal off the plane. I've eaten my way through Austin many times and am pleased to report on some old favorites and new additions.
Oven Cake breakfast from (the new) Bouldin Creek. I dream about their tofu scramble.
Red Rabbit Cooperative bakery donuts (procured at Wheatsville).
Zandunga Mexican Bistro-the fantastic aguacate relleno. That's an avocado filled with delicious things!
Dirt and Worms Sundae from Sweet Ritual (located inside Daily Juice, brand new!).
A concha right out of the oven from Mr. Natural. There is nothing more heavenly than this.

Vegan Shop Up!

Over at Pine Box Rock Shop was the holiday Vegan Shop Up. I got there early and treated myself to some presents. Monks Meat Seitan, Peanutella from Woodside Bakehouse, and peanut butter chocolate cup from Gone Pie.
Electric Blue Baking Co: spelt foccacia with chipotle roasted kabocha, walnut, chives, and cashew ricotta.

Quest for herbivore

New York amazes me sometimes. One minute you're walking amongst the many in Nolita, the next you are whisked away to the Yucatan in the open and airy Tacombi. Food is served out of an old Volkswagon Van from Playa del Carmen.
I had the tostada de aguacate and vegetable tamale. So delicious and so very fresh.
Everyone knows Burritos don't shoot well, I was going to get the tacos, but I was hungry! Kz and I stopped in to Hotel Tortuga (sister restaurant to Curly's and now defunct Burritoville) one evening and while it is decorated to feel you are far away, you are most definitely on 14th street. I had the green tortuga, a burrito filled with posole like items. Kudos to the house made tofu sour cream and while I envisioned a higher freshness to starch ratio, it was still very tasty.

You can find Pequena in Fort Greene and Prospect Heights. They offer a Mexican Vegetable filling (a standard medley) served here over tostadas.
Maya Taqueria caters to their vegan customers. This is a traditional taqueria, a little frenzied, but with tofu on the menu, how can you go wrong? I had the Shy Mayan salad and black bean & kale tacos. Lots of hominy, corn, and garlic added zing to these dishes.
A few blocks over in Prospect Heights,
Taqueria De Los Muertos: vegetarian taco with beans and lots of fresh toppings (squash, corn, pico de gallo). A massive side of rice and refried beans with more fresh pico de gallo and guacamole.
Ancho Chili Seitan Burger with piri piri whiskey sauce, arugula, beer braised smoked onions, and horseradish cream on herbed foccacia.
It's not everyday The Cinnamon Snail comes To You, for one special day they were serving free lunch near work. It was pretty cool.

Fancy Feasts

My dear friends Tim & Andrea got married, the dinner party was at Candle 79! Maybe it was all love in the air, but this was one of the most memorable meals ever. Not seen here are the appetizers.
Cannoli: vanilla cream filling, ginger-pumpkin ice cream, chocolate sauce. I love cannolis and hold a high standard for the vegan version of this classic. The tangy light cream and flaky shell really brought this cannoli to great heights.
Chili-Grilled Seitan: sauteed chard, quinoa pilaf, avocado salad, cipollini onion-cannellini bean sauce. I wish I could make seitan taste this good.
There are many occasions to brave the Upper East Side.
It was Kz's birthday and we went to V-Note. Brought to you by the Blossom folks. The Seitan Medallions Au Poivre may not look like much under the harsh glare of my flash, but I'll tell you it was something else (until I just saw there is a new addition to their menu Crispy Pine nut & basil Seitan..)

Pie, Oh My

Sometimes I'm inspired to drop dough and take a class. I'm excited about Vegan Pie in the Sky, even though I rarely make pies. I signed up for Terry Hope Romero's class at The Brooklyn Kitchen to learn more.
My individual apple pie, topped with cut out cats and bats of course. Baked the following day for breakfast.
Terry helps us conquer the fear of proper crust making. We used the olive oil method which was really interesting.

Pumpkin Cheesecake

This is no ordinary cheesecake. There is no tofu substitute stuff thickening it up, just banana, silken tofu, and cashews. I see this cheesecake in my future, beware!

Vuelve a la Vida

Hailing from Veracruz, Mexico-there is a soup called Vuelve a la Vida, or "return to life". It is said to cure any hangover. Being that I don't eat the mariscos, I head over to Top Cafe Tibet to have what I believe is the Tibetan version of this soup.
Thenthuk is full of hearty thick noodles, vegetables, tofu, in a fortifying broth. Add hot sauce for extra warmth. I promise you will leave restored.

Also, I found the new So Delicious Coconut Greek Style Yogurt. Wow, super creamy-this is something to rave about.

Smorgasburg!

I am a south Brooklyn girl. I figured it was a good omen that the G train was running and the sun shining and so I made my way north for Smorgasburg. I don't mean to pull a "I remember when..", but really, I remember when there was no waterfront in Williamsburg. My, how things have changed!

This sumptuous sweet potato pie is from Granola Lab. It is topped with their yummy granola, and might be one of the best vegan pies I've had in some time. Wholesome, spiced, earthy, with a delectable flaky crust.

Vegan Bodega! It's really neat to see all those products you read about on one table. VB hopes to open an actual Bodega, where you pop in for things like freshly sliced Monk's Meats. I picked up some queso and candy.I was very excited about the Food for Lovers Queso, an Austin based item right here in Brooklyn.
It's great. Luscious, spicy, and not too "noochy". I drizzled it over some kale along with Barry's Tempeh (also at Smorg) Mole Tempeh Tamale. So gosh darn good.
Sarah Gross does some amazing work for our four legged friends, Rescue Chocolate donates 100% of the net profits to animal rescue organizations. The Pit Bull Peanut Butter bar is my kind of chocolate bar. Dark sea salt aftertaste chocolate over fluffy peanut butter and those crispy rice crisps. This is not only delicious, but important chocolate. I am going to need more of this.

I am inspired by the entrepreneurial spirit I saw today and grateful for the access to new and exciting foods.

Larbars: The holy grail of bars. Readily available, perfect combination of protein/fat/sweet, elusive new flavors (chocolate chip cherry torte, blueberry muffin). The chocolate chip peanut butter is my hands down-go to. But sometimes you need to branch out.
Just Great Stuff-Chocolate Covered Greens
I only see these ever so often at the health food store on Cortelyou. They are kind of larabar-ish, but with actual vegetables thrown in and then covered in chocolate. Betty Lou is famous for her nut butter balls, but these need to be on more shelves.
Tanabar- Vermont's answer to nut-free
I have a vision of the perfect chocolate chip granola bar. It's chewy without hurting your teeth, the chocolate chips are for real, it's sweet enough to satisfy-but healthy enough to absolve the guilt. Tanabar has fulfilled my dream! Thanks to a tip off from a work colleague, these bars were inconspicuously located on the bottom shelf of the corner bodega. The sunflower butter, brown sugar, and wheat germ almost bring this bar to cookie heights . I want to try the other flavors, but have a feeling I will stick with chocolate chip.

It's time to sit and sip. Thank you dear friend from Colorado for bringing me Bhakti Chai. You know you want your chai to be more on the ginger side of the see-saw, not the sugar side, and Bhakti does this right.

So, there is snow covering the just changing leaves. One of my favorite things to make is Enchiladas. Stuff them, douse them, and bake! Except this time I took the snowbound day to make the tortillas myself.
That massive bag of Maseca must be put to use! Surprising easy to throw together if you have a tortilla press, these tortillas may not be photogenic but they are sooo good.

Chinatown Date

Chinatown, I seldom visit you. When I do, a hint of magic appears beneath the grit. Vietnamese food expert and friend Elicia picked out some great authentic places on a midweek night.
Pho Grand for Mango Sticky Rice. I always thought Mango Sticky Rice was Thai, but it is served at Vietnamese restaurants as well. Sweet sweet sticky rice topped with mango and coconut and some little candied something.

Fall is officially here in New York, and what better way to say good bye to warm days then with a paleta? I stopped by the Hester Street Fair for La Newyorkina's famous paletas. Because it was their last day, paletero Fany Gerson was giving out two for ones.

I am so enamored with Fany Gerson's book on Paletas. There is nothing quite like the sublime activity of licking a paleta under the warm Mexico sun. I want to recreate that feeling here in my Brooklyn apartment with paletas de aguacate.
The ever versatile avocado! Blended with water and sugar and frozen in a cute rocket shape mold. I can't wait to make more delicious treats from this beautiful book.

When I was in Austin I kept seeing Hail Merry products but never bought them because of the price. Now that they are here in NYC, I am quite frankly addicted. It's not everyday you find a quality product. Take the Meyer Lemon Miracle Tart, a zesty flavor packed 3 servings worth of goodness.
Or the macaroons, I think Hail Merry treats are superb because compared to other raw desserts they are not so nut-centric. This could be the beginning of a dangerous obsession.
While I'm waxing all things Texas, here is a lovely black cherry and coconut donut from Mr. Natural. Texas Leslie was nice enough to pack this in her suitcase last time she visited NY.

Another year wiser. Another reason to eat cupcakes. I am a stickler when it comes to them these days. Lucky for me, Steeplechase Coffee has opened up in Windsor Terrace. They serve some vegan baked goods from Tres Pommes in Park Slope. This cupcake took the cake. Moist, tender, topped with some of the best icing I've had ever. Delicate, silky, not too sweet, you want MORE not less!

Brownies

I'm also a purist when it comes to brownies, this recipe was right under my nose in VCTOYCJ. Melted chocolate and black cocoa powder make these extra brownie-y.

To the banya

Living in South Brooklyn, you have the benefit of living in the proximity of Russian Bath Houses. I usually visit Coney Island Banya, but Sandoony (and their restaurant) are an exciting find.
Pierogies. The real deal, topped with olive oil and filled with creamy potato. The delicate dumpling is just the right consistency and the caramelized onions give them a nice kick. The tea is served with honey, lemon, and cherry preserves. There is also a juice bar, it is important to stay hydrated at the banya!

The pickled vegetable plate. Yes, you have your pickle. Then you have your cabbage, tomato, some kind of daikon like radish and cabbage. Nothing like the fresh and unpretentious pickled vegetable.

After you are sufficiently soaked & steamed, I recommend you visit GSA King Tomato Farm. An excellent produce market with unblemished fruits and veggies for reasonable prices.

I'm on an Island

After a relaxing day at the beach. My mom picked up some Island Way Sorbet (from Western Beef!)

This delightful sorbet comes in the natural shell it came from. The coconut is especially creamy and possibly divine.
Thanks to a hot tip from VV, we went to Skinny Pizza in Roslyn for dinner. This place offers not only their characteristic thin crust but vegan/organic/gluten free options. I had this personal pie and should have said "easy on the daiya", but it was good, hot, and fresh. They had Boylan's vintage soda pop on tap as well.

salad days, taco nights

This is one of the many trees that fell down from The Hurricane.
The day after, I brought my Key Food provisions to the Sparrow residence to make some Nicoise Salad. I used to love those salads, and knew Appetite for Reduction's Goddess Nicoise was a sure fire try.
A fresh medley of potatoes, green beans, tomatoes, artichoke hearts, olives, chic pea mash and greens topped with a very garlicky green dressing! Also a few slabs of ArtSparrow's fantastic vegan cheese.
I'm a sucker for food trucks. Even if they are sponsored by The Gap, Pico de Gap caught my attention because of the tofu taco...with vegan lime sour cream and peach & cucumber salsa. For $1.69 you get two small tacos and a Jarrito.
Rawvolution-a new addition to the East Village by way of LA.
I had some mighty tasty pizza: almond based crust, topped with zesty marinara, olives, avocado, and cashew sour cream. Check out some additional photos via VV.

Monster Food Trucks

I go great lengths for The Cinnamon Snail. Over the Brooklyn Bridge, indiscriminately walking through tourist's photographs. For a very special Parked! Food Truck Festival at South Street Seaport. Considering they are usually parked in New Jersey (see last fall), this was a very urgent trip. My sandwich did not disappoint.

The Al Pastor Seitan sandwich: with grilled pineapple, beer battered jalapeno, greens & chipotle mayo. Also, the wonderfully named Peruvian Jungle Drop (maca, lacuma, coconut, & cacao! )
Cinnamon Snail's Mexican Hot Chocolate Twist: everything a donut should be. Washed down with a Cantaloupe Creamsicle from The Green Pirate Juice Truck.
The next day was Prospect Park's Food Truck Rally. It's always nice to see the trucks that make their appearance on Hudson Street (lunch spot) all round up together. I had Taim-all vegetarian crowd pleasing falafel.
The day after that, Crisp on Wheels vegetarian at Hudson street. I think they might have the perfect falafel: crisp, not greasy, light, and flavorful. This is the Crisp Africa with peanut sauce, habanero harissa, and really nice sweet potato crisps.

Almost 20 years ago I visited Toronto as an unknowing teen. I'm glad I had this opportunity to revisit what the city has to offer veganwise and see a very special Jeff Magnum show.

Banana Chocolate Hazelnut Crepe

Almost ten years ago I went to Paris and ate alot of street nutella crepes . There is a hole in my heart where nutella used to be. So when we went to Hibiscus in lieu of Fressen (Closed-bangers & mash be darned), I knew we had to share both the savory and the sweet.
Pear, Pecan, Spinach, a little daiya and a little pesto. Such nice flavors wrapped up in this true crepe. Find them at Hibiscus: 238 Augusta Avenue in Kensington Market

Bunners! 100% vegan & gluten free
Look at this work of beauty. This is what Red Velvet is supposed to taste like. Nuanced. The flour is not just the white stuff. The frosting piped into oblivion.

Oh Canada (salty)

It's hard to resist the allure when yr fellow blogger invites you on a trip to Toronto. We stopped at all those fantastic places in upper New York on the way up and down. KZ had an extensive list, but as designated co-pilot my eye snagged that word "vegan". Specifically, The Hogtown Vegan in Toronto.
Let me introduce, The Fries Supremacy. Not ordinary fries, but fries smothered in housemade cashew cream, housemade bacon bits, housemade queso. Can I say housemade again? The craft is unparalleled. All that fresh scallion really brought it home.
This is sweet potato on pumpernickel with more of that cashew spread and a whole mess of garlicky greens. We shared, but I could have had it all!

One Love vegetarian. Let's get together and feel all right.
Callaloo-Jamaican Greens with boiled green banana, plantain, yucca, sweet potato and avocado. Come on and get your starch on!

The other New York

It's not often mentioned on this blog, but I do love beer. Especially Flying Bison straight out of Buffalo, NY.

The Eights, Buffalo-NY. Who knew vegan pub fare could be this good? I have two words for you,
Avocado Fries.
Housemade Vegan Merguez Sandwich with sweet potato fries. It's hard to explain how something could be both fresh & flavorful but also fried & salty. They know what they are doing at The Eights.
Syracuse's Strong Hearts Cafe. A perfect late night arrival for two very hungry gals. They are 100% vegan, so that is always nice. I had the Trick Muffin, a nice little benny type tofu with sausage and a bit of daiya. Just right with a vanilla shake.
Rochester: Eco Bella Bakery. 100% vegan. Peanut butter brownie. Blueberry Cupcake.
Not so sweet, subtle, just lovely.Ithaca-Waffle Frolic. A nice Belgian waffle topped with compote and EB. A verified rarity!

Rockaway Beach!

Sure, I've been going to Rockaway the past couple of summers, but now things have changed. Now there are food concessions on the boardwalk.

Babycakes! It was really neat to see this outpost amidst the surf and sun. I had these spectacular chocolate waffles drizzled with maple syrup and coconut creme. Plus a special pretty little pink donut.

Rockaway Taco! Last summer I had their awesome tofu taco off the boardwalk.
This summer I had their pitch perfect tostada: black beans, cabbage, guacamole, pickled stuff, hot sauce & lime.

The Jersey Shore

Warning: what follows is one of the most amazing things I have ever eaten.
The Bashful Banana in Ocean City, NJ boasts their famous banana-whip. As soon as Kz mentioned these words we became obsessed in anticipation. Subsequently, totally bewildered. How do you make a creamy soft serve out of just bananas? They use a hand operated machine, and by some miracle of science create this most perfect treat. Our heaping helping was topped with fruit/cocoa sauce and choco chips.
On the boardwalk in Seaside Heights we had some Mango Polish Water Ice. Great texture, refreshing, a little sugar coat-but all in all a nice cold treat.

When Kz proposed some pretty outrageous finds just west of our city, I knew it was an offer I could not refuse.

Belmar, NJ: Kaya's Kitchen. (Vegetarian)

Here Kz snaps the heartiest plate I've ever seen (that's fried seitan steak, yes).
At Kaya's I had the Garden State Club: succulent lemon tofu with lots of stacking and legit fries.

Red Bank, NJ: Good Karma Cafe (Vegan)

This pretty little cafe served up one of the best veggie burgers-

The Earth Burger: tofu/sunflower/brown rice and baked until golden topped with their velvet-y nutri queso and savory tempeh bacon. This was toothsome and then some!

We shared their fantastic nachos. Lick worthy nutri queso with dollop of cahew sour cream and pico d.
Kz was kind enough to bring back these amazing chocolates from Divine Treasures in CT. There are too many words to begin describing how wonderful these chocolates are, please read more about it here.
Not in Jersey, but back in Manhattan...I never brave the Kimchi Taco truck line, but one day it was significantly shorter and so I had their tofu falafel tacos. That is alot of fusion, but it works! Spicy kimchi tops the tender tofu falafel nuggets wrapped in perfect corn tortilla.

Living in Windsor Terrace, there is a small price to pay for tranquility...not a whole lot of food options. I stopped in Brancaccio's for a heaping of sides: broccoli rabe, cauliflower, and pesto pasta. Just perfect.
Brooklyn Commune, my go-to place for soup & salad now offers a BLT with Brooklyn's own Barry's Tempeh. This is a true sandwich. Equal parts crunch, fresh, spice, with the right sized (grilled) bread.
Arepas. A beautiful word. Arepera Guacuco has a vegetarian option filled with two of my favorite things: plantains and avocado. Fresh and flavorful, this is just another way to consume the ever versatile maize. Check out some additional photos here.

The Beginning and the End

We landed late night in Tuxtla Guiterrez. The vegetariana restaurant Naturalissimo was the perfect place to begin the day before taking off for San Cristobal. (6a Poniente Norte 124)
Enchiladas Suizas filled with soyachorizo and doused in some miraculous sauce. They also have a location in San Cristobal if you are hankering for more.
Thanks to some points, I flew home from Cancun. If you must spend 24 hours in Cancun after a 20 hour bus ride from Chiapas. I recommend you visit B Organic Deli & Organic Boutique in downtown. I just grabbed a licuado and some cookies, but you get the idea. (Gladiolas 16/Yaxchilan)
What is Mexico without a nieve? Finally hot enough to have one, I chose the tuna (prickly pear) and guayabera. The tuna is a pretty pink color.
Don't leave downtown Cancun. Sit in Parque de las Palapas and have some veggie tacos from one of the many food vendors. If you have time visit Mercado 23 to take in the spices, candies, and produce.
I hear Manana on Isla Mujeres has some great falafel, unfortunately they were closed. The island is just a short ferry ride away where the water is calm and plentiful.

Fruit of the Gods

Cacao was once considered the fruit of the gods. At the Kakaw: Museo del Cacao in San Cristobal, you can learn all about it. I highly recommend their chocolate, in fact-I should have bought more. It almost has the rich consistency of a brownie with the just the right amount of sweet.

Then, there is regular old fruit. Though nothing regular about local/fresh/complimentary fruit! This is the ensalada de frutas from the excellent Le Gite de Sol.
There is nothing like real hot chocolate from Kakao Natura Chocolateria. We spent many a rainstorm sipping frothy cocoa and watching and waiting.

The first time I went to Mexico I went to 100% Natural. During this trip, I visited three different locations. You simply cannot beat the Tofusio.

San Cristobal, I have been dreaming about you for a year. I'm so glad I made it back! On streets slick with afternoon rain, we explored this city for some of the best eating I've done in a while.

I never had a Tlayuda in Oaxaca. So I figured I should here. A giant corn tortilla baked over a grill and in this case folded and filled with an amazing assortment of veggies (cabbage, nopales, cilantro, black beans, avocado and on and on). A cheap and filling eat on the street. I might have had a little help eating this.
El Gato Gordo-After I ate that tlayuda, I ate more. I could live on beans and rice. El Gato Gordo is a festive restaurant with many vegetarian options. You can't go wrong with arroz y frijoles.
There is always falafel. From Falafel. Very fluffy pita and filled with fresh good stuff.
Mayambe-a diverse and veggie friendly menu, Mayambe is owned by some friendly ex-pats. I had the double veggie curry with beautiful rice. Coming from NYC, I would wager this was some damn fine curry.
I've been to La Casa del Pan in Coyoacan, Cuernavaca, and now San Cristobal! Fantastic Enchiladas Suizas filled with squash, calabaza, and other vegetables with a side of my favorite black beans. La Casa del Pan also has yoga classes, film screenings, and a bakery/tienda.
Maya Pakal-Chile relleno filled with veggies, sauced, and sided with rice. This was one of those fantastic specials that included a beverage, tortillas, and postre, and soup--all for USD $6.00 or so. Maya Pakal is another vegetariana friendly place! Thankfully, the word gets thrown around a lot in San Cristobal.

Garden Grille Cafe-technically in Pawtucket and all veg. I had Reggies Raw Heaven: Arugula, mango, grapefruit, beet infused jicama, topped with cashew gomasio. A refreshing and cleansing meal after cupcakes and soft serve (see below).

We shared these hearts of palm cakes.
A beautiful bakery is just a few doors down. Wildflour is an offshoot of GG, it happens to be vegan and every item is presented with great care and excellence.

We boarded the megabus in search of good eats in Providence, Rhode Island. This is what we found.
This is the St. Jamez Benedict from Julian's. Quite possibly one of the best brunches I have ever had. Cornmeal dredged tofu topped with a savory sauce sided with garlic greens and tasty potatoes. They did this right and then some.
Our gracious hosts treated us to a bounty of vegan cupcakes.
An assortment of wonderful things like roasted veggies, wild rice with pesto, spring rolls, and a savory chic pea eggplant dish.
There was sangria, olives, Ines Rosales tortas, sweet and spicy peppers, garlicky brushetta and so much more.

for the love of froyo

Folks often say, "I would miss cheese so much". A small voice responds in me, "I miss yogurt and froyo". Finally, a non-dairy yogurt that has the texture and consistency of...yogurt. Amande is almond based, contains very few thickening agents, and the plain is sweetened with just a bit of fruit juice. Making it actually not sweet! (a good thing compared to some soy yogurts on the market). Amande also has a good amount of fat and protein to hold you over to snack time. Hallelujah!
Who ventures to the Upper East Side for soft serve fruit? I do. Puerto Rican day parade, small dog obstacle course, aspiring gossip girls be darned. The Soft Serve Fruit Co. makes soft serve out of actual fruit, a little water, and organic cane sugar. Just short of fantastic.
I had the Crunchy Salty Sundae: Banana soft serve, banana, chocolate chips, pretzels, and peanut butter. Wow. This is some powerfully light palette pleasing stuff. I also tried the mango soft serve-perfect for when Italian ices and sorbet are just not cutting it.
Luckily, The Soft Serve Fruit Co (previously called Simply Peeled) will be opening up a location on 16th and Broadway later this month. I'll be the first in line at the new location.

There's nothing like stepping out for lunch and trying a new food truck. The Jalapeno has some tasty vegetarian tacos, fresh tortilla and zesty fillings.
Pho Chay-the magic words that mean "Vegetarian Pho". It used to be hard to find in NYC but now I think it is catching on. The star anise spiked broth, simple veggies, and rice noodles are a perfect pick me up.

I was going to make cupcakes for Easter, but maybe got cupcaked out? (see here.) So I took to the streets and bought No Tellin' It's Vegan-Easter Cupcakes from Natural Frontier Market on Cortelyou.
Hecho En Dumbo celebrates contemporary Mexico City cuisine. On a menu that was challenging to veganize in a restaurant as magical as the city I left my heart in, I settled on some antojitos (little cravings) like these sopes topped with black bean, lettuce, and nopales.
and this pretty ensalada de col-local green cabbage with ginger gold apple, roasted pumpkin seed, red onion in a cider-avocado vinaigrette.
I thought my heart belonged to The Dosa Man. On a recent trip to Long Island, Kz brought me to Dosa Diner, where the Chennai Dosa nearly convinced me otherwise.
Passing by Sky Ice one day in Park Slope I had to stop in when I saw that word "vegan". They specialize in Asian inspired flavored ice-cream with a good amount of sorbet. I had the Kiwi-Pear and Mango. The sorbet truly tasted like frozen fruit, not too sweet, and refreshing.

One minute I'm sitting in my apartment poking around for a new place to eat, the next I'm on the B68 to Midwood for Salud. Salud is the kind of place I dream about (the website alone is a sight for sore eyes). A Mexican-American juice bar, incorporating heritage into an organic and mostly vegetarian menu. Salud means health, but also...cheers!

It's not everyday tofu shows up on a Mexican restaurant menu. When it does, rest assured, I brave the elements and the B35 bus to Sunset Park for Eclipse. Eclipse has a separate vegetarian menu and I can say with full confidence this is the best Mexican food in Brooklyn.

The Vegetarian Combination Platter: Airy sauce soaked tofu enchilada, a real (fried) potato quesadilla, and guacamole tostada. All this and a side of black beans and rice. So fresh and flavorful and even light.Best in Manhattan: Lupe's East LA Kitchen . They excel in simplicity, have a separate veg menu (no tofu though) and you can't beat their Vegetarian Roll lunch special. How much do I love shredded crisp lettuce and creamy refried beans? Let me count the ways..

Colorado-Bhakti Chai. Only in Nederland, Colorado is the chai micro-brewed and so strong you know the first ingredient is Ginger. I only had one cup but need more.
California-Gracias Madre. From the team that brought you Cafe Gratitude, the bay-area's only vegan, organic, non-GMO Mexican food. I can only imagine choosing from an entire menu made up of one of my most favorite foods and being able to order everything without modification.
Texas: I want Vegan Queso. Made by Food for Lovers. Our paths never crossed in Austin, but I'm afraid it is time.

I tried to go to the NYC vegetarian festival, but found a line wrapped around the block and the venue at full capacity. I then thought at least I'd grab something from The Cinnamon Snail, but found yet another wrap around line. Glad I went there last season.
Do I get an A for effort?
On another crowded morning I stopped by the Brooklyn Flea for the Bakesale for Japan.
I bought some Korean Sweet Potato Bread from Mis Pensamientos.
Then waited in line for Salvadorian Pupusas. Luckily the kind pupusera made mine special sans cheese. The delicious corn masa pattie was filled with beans and spinach and topped with cabbage, hot sauce, and jalapenos.
La Esquina-an authentic taqueria in old Noho. I had the acelgas taco (beans, spinach, pico, and salsa verde) with a side of moros y cristianos (black beans and white rice).
Calexico is a food truck turned restaurant in Greenpoint created by three bros from...Calexico. I'm always excited when I see tofu on the menu, so I went for the Tofu Asado Torta. Grilled chili-lime tofu stacked into ciabatta bread with a side of spicy fries.

When one of your best bros moves to Fort Collins-Colorado, it is only natural to visit, breath some mountain air, and of course-eat. This pretty sweet potato roll is from Watercourse in Denver (where I had the pleasure of dining this past summer on the Kz Southwest food tour), and shipped up to Bean Cycle-a great cafe/bookstore.
We all know what a day of eating larabars and blue chips will do to you. When I spotted Currito a the Boston airport for a layover I jumped at the word "tofu". This tasty summer burrito is full of cilantro rice, tofu, mango salsa, and guacamole. Not bad for the airport!
Avogadro's is famous for it's homemade tempeh. Sit in the macrame swathed booths, sip Fort Collin's own Fat Tire, and chew on one of their many meatless sandwiches. The Greek Wrap has their famous tempeh, avocado, green olives, and fixins. There is also live music and dancing to burn off the sams and beer.
In Nederland, a small town north of Boulder, we stopped for some much needed high altitude lunch. Wild Mountain Smokehouse & Brewery has a Token Tofu sandwich for the likes of me. Perfectly smoked and served with Thai barbecue sauce, this was a great option.
Tasty Harmony is the place to go in Fort Collins. It is 100% veg, spacious, and filled with that special breed of friendly waitstaff. For dessert I had this raw mousse pie.
For dinner, the La Sabrosa burrito. Jam packed with just about everything including their cashew cheese.

Over on Cortelyou Road in nearby Kensington is Cafe Tibet. Although these noodles did not make it to the last post, they are here now. The thenthuk is full of homemade flat noodles in spicy veg broth. All vegan items are clearly marked on the menu.

Cowgirl's Baking. A diminutive bakery with a wollop of flavor choices and years of tinkering to produce the most phenomenal cupcake I've had in quite some time. I mean, where can you get a rich chocolate cupcake, chock full of chocolate chips, topped with ganache, coffee whipped frosting, AND a donut? This creation left nary a sugar coated coat in my mouth, nor gave me the sugar shakes. It is chock full of true flavor and dedication.

It is almost not noodle weather. It is almost Spring! If you find yourself in Hells Kitchen, you should surely find yourself at Kyotofu. A cute Japanese dessert bar with a good number of vegan options.
Such as the Valrhona Cake with peanut brittle, caramel, and coconut sorbet. In the back is the black sesame sweet tofu with hoji-cha syrup and sesame tuile.

I rarely venture above Houston street. It's true. I also shy away from long lines and wait lists. Defying self-made rules, we made it into Totto Ramen. Their spicy vegetable ramen was worth the hype. Topped with an array of vegetables including avocado and peppery yuzu paste. Just a hop, skip, and a jump away from Kyotofu (for dessert of course).
I have to thank Chopsticks, without it I would never know about restaurants that specialize in vegetarian ramen/broths. Such as Sobakoh, this wonderful addition to their menu, the vegetarian nabe or hot pot is filled with their in-house noodles, tofu, and assorted vegetable toppings.
Seeking respite from a rainy Sunday I tucked into Lotus Vietnamese Sandwiches. If only for the sign that read vegetarian pho. Sure, it wasn't exactly Lan Cafe, but a lovely simple soup topped off with some sriracha can only do you good.

Souen Ramen: I can write about you over and over. A bowl of this ramen will purify and restore you-I can vouch for it.
Fellow ramen girl shared these Souen seitan dumplings with me. Sometimes it is hard to share something so delicate and delish.

Waking up to yet another snowy morning to Venezuelan Cachapas* aka: Corn Pancakes.
While fondly remembering yesterday's brunch at Three Brothers in Rockville Centre, Long Island.

I was convinced to hop on the old LIRR when I caught wind of the Vegan Nutella Crepe at 3 Brothers. I basically lust after nutella. These light fluffy crepes were filled with their own housemade version as well as bananas. In the background is their flavorful housemade seitan. This was well worth the trip!
What better way to use up a retired baguette then to whip up some Brazilian Banana Rabanada*? Aka: Banana drenched french toast. Another satisfying winter breakfast.
I long for the brownies of my youth. Yes, the kind that came out of a box. They need to be gooey and they must have that crackly top. I modified King Arthur's recipe and found outstanding results. Sure, there is a cup of earth balance and 2 of sugar...but sometimes you have to go there. This particular batch is adorned with Austin grown pecans from Texas Leslie's kitchen.
Lasagne* topped with roasted cauliflower. For entertaining guests and delicious leftovers.
Monday Mexican at Lupe's East LA Kitchen. Here is a no frills & no-dairy vegetarian burrito. A good way to ease into the work week and think of warmer days and places.

We're having empanadas

You may have heard, this has been some winter. I needed to have the girls over, an assembly requiring project, and an event to celebrate the end of January.

Empanada end-product. Hand Model: ArtSparrow.
Filling the empanadas with house-made black bean chorizo and mole sweet potatoes. Wrapped in a rich whole wheat pastry dough, these were well worth the effort.
Tres leches cake. Rice milk, soy milk, and coconut milk. I modified by soaking the cake in horchata and topping with a cajeta like frosting (a sweet caramelized milk).

It's been a long time (10 years?) since I've lived within walking distance of friends. I needed to take advantage of this predicament and have my neighbors over for some brunch.

I'm a sucker for powerhouse vegan cookbooks by Isa & Terry. Appetite for Reduction is a revelation in simple, fast, low-cal recipes. Nary a dessert in sight, but chock full of "soul-satisfying" soups, such as Tortilla Soup seen below. I'm also a sucker for Los Bros Hernandez and got to thinking exactly what is Heartbreak Soup (sopa de gran pena) and have often wondered what would be in it...

Nothing goes to waste in the Kansha Kitchen. So says author Elizabeth Andoh in this beautiful table book. This is a cause to celebrate the many facets of the daikon, to practice flavor symmetry, and to break out your dedication for some complex but worth-it recipes. From foot stomped noodles to dora yaki (those wonderful red bean filled pancakes) this book will inspire you to create in an age old tradition rooted in Japanese Buddhist philosophy.

My blog banner will attest, I am fascinated by Mexico's passion for sweets. Fany Gerson's My Sweet Mexico will take you there, while providing a historical context to the origin of Mexico's sweet tooth. 1/2 c. olive oil
1/2 c. dry white wine
2 1/2 c Flour
1/4 t salt

add flour slowly to liquid, dough should not be sticky. Divide dough into walnut sized balls, roll into ropes, and shape into rings. Drop into salted boiling water 7-8 at a time, remove when surfaced, let cool, and bake at 350 degrees for 40 minutes.

Last January I had the pleasure of visiting Ki'Xocoltal cafe in Merida, Mexico. How surprised was I to find this chocolate just around the corner from my home. Brooklyn Commune hosted a chocolate tasting where I gladly consumed chocolate from the wilds of the Yucatan.
Sometimes you have to make your own chocolate.
The "Bain Marie". This is the French way of saying water bath. Or melting cacao powder and cacao butter over boiling water.

I love my new neck of the woods. A bit off the beaten path, it offers a bit of quiet respite from the daily grind. That quiet comes at a price, there are few places to have coffee or pick up items for your cooking needs. I was pretty pleased when Brooklyn Commune opened their doors just steps from the Ft Hamilton Parkway subway stop.

I'm not the first to say I'd rather be hot than cold. As winter approaches I'm scheming to find every way to do so. In Texas I was introduced to Cholulua. A wonderful hot sauce from Mexico. It makes mostly everything good.
Chilli Mac based on Tempeh Chili Con Frijoles on the new & improved recipe site PPK. This will make your nose run and warm your insides. Fuel for the fire.
I love nothing more than a clearly marked vegetarian/vegan menu. Especially at Chavella's named after Mexican songstress Chavella Vargas. Tucked away in Crown Heights, this was an exciting brunch spot. I had the egg-less Plato Del Don, a nice assortment of chilaquiles, refried beans, potato, veggies, and avocado.

Right around the time I skipped town this spring, S'Nice opened up another location in Soho. Now that I'm back working in the area, I was excited to have a vegetarian sandwich/baked good/juice option.

Blossom Du Jour is a new to-go version of the big fancy in Chelsea. I had the midtown melt and perhaps I had a case of "I ordered the wrong item", but I couldn't help but pine for the perfectly proportioned Chic Pea sandwich from Terri. I stopped by Cocoa V on the out for a chocolate treat.

In simpler times (14 years ago to be exact), I worked at Vito's Bake Shop, a traditional Italian bakery in downtown Mineola. I ate my weight in cannolis, buttered rolls, and tarelli. I have a major soft spot for cannolis, so it didn't take much convincing when Kz recommended John's of 12th Street.
John's of 12th Street is a classy old school New York type of place. Complete with red glow, bow-tied waiters, and cloth napkins. The real deal. They also have a separate vegan menu. I had the Seitan Alla Rossa. A hearty dish that came with spaghetti and Soy parma.
We had to eat real quick as the New York City marathon was the next day and apparently it was time for folks to stock up on carbs.

Cannoli & Panna Cotta. Not too sweet, nor too creamy-but vegan Italian desserts all the same!

6 Kitchens, 6 Months

As much as I love being a ramblin' woman, there is nothing quite like the comforts of home. A new home, that is mine nonetheless. As you all know, getting acquainted with your kitchen is akin to forming a new relationship. The nuances of your kitchen directly affect the outcome of your labor of love.

To break in my oven I made this Chard Pie in homage to one of the first things I ever made for myself, Spinach Pie. The aforementioned Spinach Pie was a "no assembly required" type of dish that I copied from my mother's refrigerator door: ricotta, eggs, readymade crust, and spinach. A no brainer for a novice. This time around I modeled the recipe after the Vegan Brunch quiche and threw in some of that "We Can't Say It's Cheese". I can't say how pleased I am with this product! Velvetly luscious cheezy sauce that is oatmeal based (!) The only problem with new kitchens is that they are often bereft. I rolled the crust out with a coffee can.
My mom used to make chocolate chip cookies with duncan hines yellow cake mix* (which is oddly enough technically vegan). I dream about those fluffy cookies studded with chocolate morsels. Knowing how much my friend Karen loves yellow cake and chocolate chip cookies, I collaborated with ArtSparrow in her kitchen to make this chocolate chip cake. The shot here is pure action, no styling. Birthday candles were blown out in a bar and cake devoured by hand and plastic knife/fork.

*Not wanting any baking mishaps, we relied on Cherrybrook Kitchens's Excellent yellow cake mix.

Angel Hair Pasta Puttanesca

One day I was looking through The Wise Guy Cookbook (Goodfellas). I was shocked to learn that Pasta Puttanesca literally means "Whore's Pasta". The story goes that Italy's brothels were once state owned. The civil servants were allotted one day a week to shop (in order to not disturb the other ladies) and so they often had to throw together whatever they had on hand.(Wiki Source).

Kalamata Olives and Luigi Vitelli Tomatos

ArtSparrow and I decided to prepare this dish while watching another mobster flick, The Godfather. One too many glasses of Coppola wine turned this very serious movie funny. The sauce making became pure Ethel & Lucy slapstick. In any event, it tasted delicious!
The sauce usually calls for anchovies. No fishies made their way into the pot, though there were plenty of olives and capers for brine and even nooch & spinach for health. We were sure to use Luigi Vitelli canned tomato and Barilla pasta (per my mother's instructions).

There is nothing like a bowl of noodles.

Pasta's origins began in Asia, the story goes that Marco Polo brought noodles over to Italy and dubbed them "macaroni".
These original Udon are from Samurai Mama where any bowl can be served with vegetarian broth.

Like ol' blue eyes Frank Sinatra, my grandfather was born in Hoboken, New Jersey. My great grandparents were literally fresh off the boat and promptly returned to Italy after his birth (Grandpa would return to Queens when he was 15). So, I've always been curious about the city just over the Hudson river. The Cinnamon Snail provided the inspiration to get my tush on the PATH train. The Cinnamon Snail is a Vegan Food Truck.

It's always a toss up. Do I order a sweet or savory breakfast? Instead of Korean barbeque seitan open faced on a grilled tortilla, slathered with chilli butter, kimchi and greens I opted for the sweet. Good vegan french toast and pancakes are hard to pass up.
The Cinnamon Snail is parked on Sinatra and 1st in Hoboken Thu-Sat 9-3. Follow them on Facebook or Twitter for updates. The great thing about food trucks is that they attract people who might not normally go for food labeled "vegan". Every customer at CS positively celebrated the dishes by exclaiming "that looks amazing!", this could be in response to the their mission to create food to inspire peace & bliss.

It's inevitable. Just when I start assembling some form of daily routine, I slip into a state of wanderlust. Nothing quite takes the edge off this desire than making a plate to resemble one that could be eaten in another place. I thought I would take a stab at Mofongo or Gallo Pinto, dishes I ate in my pre-blogging days (in Puerto Rico and Costa Rica respectively). Instead, I set my sights for the unknown, Brazil. This dish is homage to a certain page in Viva Vegans and includes: plantains, Brazilian shredded kale, orange rice, and Feijoada (a black bean stew).

It is that time of year again. Summer gives way to fall, and my birthday rolls around. I embrace any excuse to indulge and happily accept sweet gifts from my dear friends. Such as this moist chocolate cake topped with toasted coconut. Baked good by Kz.
Babycakes all the way in apple picking Warwick, NY. A delightful surprise from thoughtful Megan.
Brownies. I'm a stickler for the perfect brownie. It should neither be too fudgey or too cakey but somewhere in between. I made these by the book (Isa) and am still debating if they meet my standard.
I used to live down the street from A-Bistro in Fort Green. I loved frequenting this small restaurant ran by a welcoming couple with Senegalese touched dishes.
Now that I find myself subletting back in the old hood (and alerted that tofu has shown up on the menu), there was no debate as to where to go for a low key dinner.
Charette's Seared Marinated Tofu-with braised kale, sauteed strawberries, and crispy yucca cake with strawberry vinaigrette.
This very rich, complex dish hit many spots on many varied levels. Especially that yucca cake.
Succulent plantains, smothered in a maple syrup based sauce.

Whenever I'm on the LES, I can't resist a trip into Babycakes. Especially for a chocolate glazed donut and frosting topped brownie bite.

The Tofu Sandwich at Nicky's Vietnamese Sandwiches is spot on. The piping hot tofu mixes in nicely with the fresh vegetables.

Is there anything better than rice & beans? This fluffy rice gets it yellow hue from achiote (annato) spiked oil. It's the gift that keeps on giving, you make it at your latest host kitchen and have plenty to eat for days to come.In other Latin American dish news, I was super excited to visit the new V-Spot Food Truck in Lower Manhattan. I'd be the first to argue that Austin vegan food trucks trump New York's. With the emergence of the V-Spot and Cinnamon Snail (well, Hoboken) I'd wager we are catching up!

The Good, The Bad, The Okay

The Good: Strolling around lower Manhattan during my lunch break, I came upon YOrganic who specialize in fresh BiBimBop arrangements and Soy Frozen Yogurt. One of my most favorite things to eat as a teen was frozen yogurt with strawberries, so this was truly a blast from the refreshing past. I have been back three times for this tangy soy fro-yo done right!
The Okay: Soy Gelato from Scoopz Park Slope (158 5th Avenue). I happen to have enjoyed eating Gelato in Italy too. Scoopz Cioccolato (Chocolate!) was very tasty but just not creamy enough for me on this given day.
The Bad: Klein's cookie & cream from Healthy Nibbles on Flatbush. I normally don't like to air my undercurrent of virgoan criticism here, but Klein's left a funny taste in my mouth (literally). It's made with mostly thickening agents & partially hydrogenated coconut oil and while it may do in a pinch, I believe we have many options out there.

Inspired by recent travel and taco reporting within the city, I had the girls over for a make your own taco night. Rooftop dining made this night extra special, thanks to my recent gig as garden/cat sitter extraordinaire.
So simple, yet so delicious. Refried beans, radish, guacamole, corn, tomato, and cilantro.
In honor of my sister's visit from Eugene, my mom made a vegan lasagna, the recipe based on Veganomicons. Let me preface this by saying that I truly miss my mom's traditional lasagna. She was so proud of her vegan one and especially enjoyed making the tofu ricotta. My mother also shared her secret for perfect pasta: make sure it is Barilla and throw in a handful of salt. You can't go wrong with 40 years of pasta making (being Italian doesn't hurt either).

Kz hosted a spectacular brunch, including not only beautiful vintage arrangements but danish, cinnamon buns, and orange scones. My favorite was the tofu cream cheese danish. I haven't tasted anything like that in years!
Kz Tiramisu-perfectly not too sweet, the excellent recipe from Seitan is my motor, danish, and breakfast sandwich (herbed artichoke biscuit w/ cherry sage sausage and vegan brunch omelet).
Hosted at a home in Long Island, the ample space and sea tinged air made this brunch extra special.

Seas of Cheese

Summer nights in the city call for steaming hot pizzas topped with daiya-right? Kz had this groupon for ZPizza and we went to town. Two pies, four girls, significant leftovers, slight discomfort.

And so it was my turn to try the Vegan Mac n' Cheese from S'Mac. Really creamy and comforting but perhaps missing just a little kick. You'll be happy to know this is Coconut milk based with a little marmite for fun.

Mex in the City

Last October I concluded that the best Mexican food in New York is Papacitos . While that may be true, I'm still on the path for finding more options. Texas and Mexico were the inspiration behind this taco (and one burrito) report. Rockaway Taco definitely tops my list, but every visit is worthy of accolades on multiple and various levels.
La Lucha's unique bill delivery.

Austin is The Place to go for Tex-Mex. No bones about it. Here is Mr. Natural, my go-to guy.

La Lucha

La Lucha is the East Village's answer to Mexican taquerias that are visited when attending a Lucha match. I enjoyed not only the decor but the authentic execution of this important aspect of Mexican culture.
Matematico taco with poblano & beans. Every veggie item is marked on the menu and can be easily veganized. I'll be back for the cafe de olla (it wasn't finished brewing).
As I was eating my taco I recognized one of the luchadors on the postered wall. The Blue Panther (sans mask of course). I first saw him
with my new friend Leah, at Arena Coliseo. While I am on a roll, check out another gal I met in Mexico City, Girl Unstoppable.

Rockaway Taco

One steamy Monday Kz accompanied me to Rockaway Taco located steps from the waves at Rockaway Beach.
I was not only impressed but shocked by this Taco stand that offers fresh, simple, authentic tacos. This corner of 96th street, Queens also has Jack's Coffee & Veggie Island (fresh veggies & juice). There goes the neighborhood!
Tofu Taco topped with shreds of cabbage, radish, cilantro, and ample guacamole. The tortilla was totally fresh and the tofu just right. To the side some fried sweet plantains.

Alma

Alma's Veggie Tacos Al Pastor. Grilled amazing seitan, pineapple, and peppers with hominy, shredded cabbage & cilantro and fresh tortilla. Absolutely amazing and worth the $17! I lived around the block from Alma for years and only ever had plantains and fruit so this new addition to the menu was exciting news to me. Add the beautiful view of Brooklyn, old friends, and a margarita for a downright perfect evening.

Oaxaca

Mixed vegetable and potato poblano tacos from Oaxaca (Carrol Gardens) with a side of good ol' rice & beans. A very fresh option and almost as good as the city it's named for!

Taco Chulo

Conejo (Rabbit) Vegan Burrito from Taco Chulo (Cute Taco!) in Williamsburg. Plus: radish, giant chunks of avocado, and fresh cabbage. Though after completing this burrito I realized that I can no longer eat half my weight in burrito form, I am a taco girl from here on out.

The Key to Queens

Thanks to Darling Em, I was recently presented with my very own key to the city.
One of the options in this public art project was to visit Tortilleria Nixtamal where presenting the key grants the visitor a tour and the option to make your own tortilla. Arriving via the 7 train to Corona, Queens is like stepping into Latin America. The sounds and smells brought me back to my favorite place south of the border.
First, lunch was in order. Simple bean & avocado tacos with excellent salsa & horchata to drink.
White corn is ground into masa on site (yellow being sweeter). The best part about corn tortillas is that they are rarely made with lard or shortening (compared to wheat). Owner and native Mexican Fernando Ruiz wanted to dispel the myth that there is no authentic Mexican cuisine in NYC by creating an authentic tortilleria. Here is my masa ball pressed in the tortilla maker.

After my tortilla adventure, I stopped by Highline Park in Chelsea for People's Pops. I read about this place on David Lida's blog (Mostly Mexico City). They are made in the tradition of panelas, and during my time spent in Texas and Mexico I truly came to appreciate the importance of the icy/nieve, conveniently free of dairy. This blueberry/lavender pop had actual blueberry skin and seeds and the lavender was a nice compliment.

If I had it my way, my geographical axis would encompass Austin, The D.F., as well as the 5 Boroughs. Mere days after I set my sights for NY, Iggi's Texatarian opened, just a hop, skip, and jump away from where I was staying on Cesar Chavez. They offer the southern comfort food I grew to love just a little too much. I also never made it to Ice Queens (thunderstorm/bike), but admire any outfit run by roller derby queens who quit the 9-5 world to shave their own ice.

Back in Williamsburg Brooklyn, Kz and I strolled past the soon to be opened vegan bakery (and outpost of Boneshakers) Champs and Lo & Behold (to our explosive excitement) it was open!

A real New York bagel from Wholy Bagels, made by a real New Jerseyen! Only problem was no tofutti. (4404 West William Cannon).
The smell of tortillas emanating from El Milagro Tortilleria.
Mango & Chamoy Snowball from Casey's New Orleans Snowballs (808 E. 51st/Airport Way). Much like Barton Springs, necessary for cooling off!
McG's own ice-cream (Cookies & Cream). Unfortunately we never got a hold of the bike-cream maker (yes, a bicycle powered ice-cream maker).

This past Saturday was Counter Culture's 1 year anniversary. I biked some very many sweaty miles to participate in the celebration. The very busy vegan food cart was accompanied by live music and outdoor sundae station.
Mini corn dogs and curry macaroni salad.
Sundae with soy delicious plus strawberry raw creme, butterscotch, crumbled cookies & almonds. This had to be eaten very quickly to avoid inevitable meltdown.
It is National Veggie Dog Month and what better way to celebrate than with Field Roast Mexican Chipotle Sausage topped with McG's own fermented sauerkraut. (Later that evening)

Has it really been two months since I've spent any quality time in the kitchen? Nothing spells comfort like flour caked hands and garlic peels..
Lately I've been pretty obsessed with biscuits. Sure, it is about a bazillion degrees out, but nothing says country like a plate of biscuits. I used Crystal's recipe for this flaky moist gems.

Okie-Dokie

Oklahoma City, Oklahoma.
Okay, so Raw Food restaurant in Oklahoma ? We were there, our last day on the road. 105 Degrees. Where it turns out one of my favorite bloggers is a pastry chef! The menu was created by Matthew Kenney of Pure Food & Wine fame.

I had the macro plate-sesame spinach, kim chi, coconut rice. Everything was very tasty but I couldn't help noticing my dining partner's (vKzv) plate lurking in the background, gnocchi.
For dessert: The Napolean. Macadamia pastry, chantilly creme, chocolate custard, raspberry sauce. I used to like the Italian bakery style Napolean so this was certainly a treat. Small in size but packed with flavor and freshness. The pina colada smoothie was full of wonderful things like coconut butter & water, pineapple, and aloe.

The Road

Forgive my back pedaling, but here we are back in Moab, Utah. Land of Red Rocks and Pink Skies. Unfortunately Love Muffin and Peace Tree Juice Cafe were closed and so we went for Thai, you can't go wrong with that, right?

After scaling big rocks we were due for a hearty breakfast, tofu scramble, potatoes, and balanced fresh bread did the trick. Eklecticafe-352 North Main Street, Moab.

En route to Kansas we stopped in Denver, and when in Denver- Watercourse is in order! I had The Conejos-hearty tempeh/tofu scramle and biscuits. City o' City is another bistro like sibling in the Watercourse family and there I had another hearty dish of potatoes, rice croquettes, and coconut cream sauce, for dessert we split a Ho Ho cupcake, just like a deviled snack cake from the 80's. Hearty was mentioned a mere three times in this post and eaten three times in three days.

In Kansas

d'Sozo Cafe Vegetalien located in Wichita, Kansas is not only 100% vegan but offers a side of wellness n' spirituality and proudly hosts the fabulous french chef Miguel Larcher who we had the honor of speaking with.

Asparagus Crepe with nut based bechamel sauce and huge potatoes. Wow, I have not tasted a crepe like this since...(a long time ago). A vegan milagro! Chef Miguel provided us with complimentary tofu cheesecake unlike anything I have tasted before, light and fluffy with graham crumble and even cheesecake "skin".

Kansas City, Missouri-Where not one, but three awesome vegetarian/vegan restaurants rule the school.

Who knew Fud could be so good? This was by far my favorite meal on this trip. Proprietress Heidi VanPelt-Belle thoroughly explained every nuance to us as bells and whistles went off in my mind. (100% vegan menu).

Raw cashew ice-cream sundae w/ raw cacao sauce and superfood raw caramel. Out of this world! Not since Spiral Diner have I loved a sundae so (though so different!).

Jack Phish Chalupa-seasoned jack fruit, raw nut based cheddar and sour cream plus ample avocado and tomato and mole of course, in a perfectly fried tortilla. Hands down, one of the best things I have ever tasted! Everything was so fresh and expertly seasoned, I could go on but hopefully the photos will speak volumes.

Cafe Seed, a sweet small vegan cafe with a fine choice of brunch options. Such as the sausage/tofu scramble on a biscuit (100% vegan menu).

Eden Alley is situated in the basement of a church, in one of the most spacious environments I have ever dined in. I opted for the triple, a combination of smaller sized entrees: Eggplant parm w/ cashew cheese, BBQ beans over mashed potatoes, and avocado Veracruz served with the most perfectly prepared brown rice and my favorite of the three with bread & agave earth balance.

During my formative years I spent some time in SLC visiting the homebase of an old flame. This time around we not only had purpose but fun expanding our social skill set and getting down to bluegrass (when not eating some truly exceptional food).

Sage's Cafe-Beautiful "pure" vegetarian cafe that we luckily visited on All You Can Eat Pizza night. Slice after innovative slice was brought out and I soon was unable to keep up with the supply (thank goodness for doggie bags and friends to share with).
"Cheeseburger" Slice: included unbelievable fennel sausage, nut Parmesan, cheesy nooch and veggies. Every bite was a cause to celebrate.
The slices just kept coming! It was positively overwhelming. The selection included: BLT w/ a rich white sauce and tempeh, mozza and marinara, curry vegetable, and potato w/ sausage. My favorites were the BLT and potato w/ sausage. The crust was perfect and I even witnessed the kitchen staff tossing the dough in the air. I hereby declare Sage's pizza to be the best vegan pizza I have ever had!
Vertical Diner, homestyle vegan brunch perfect for one of those mornings after one too many.
Biscuits & Gravy, w/ a side of basic tofu, potatoes, and steamed veggies.

The famous Chocolate covered "Dillo" from Cake Walk (think twinkie), found at another coffeehouse.

City Cakes & Cafe considers itself both a traditional and vegan bakery-however, everything was vegan except for one item!
Peanut butter and chocolate cupcake. You know this is one of my favorite combinations.
Mac & Cheese, made with a cashew & red pepper sauce (City Cake has a light lunch menu as well).
Cake Walk will be opening a location in SLC soon. In the meantime we hunted down their baked goods at Coffee houses. S'mores cupcake from No Brow Coffee. Too many sweets do make the heart go pump in the night, so luckily we two can split many of these treats.

Unfortunately, we missed the 4th annual veggie hot dog eating contest in Austin! To make up for it, here is my veggie pup, blue potatoes, and fixin's for a 4th of July bbq hosted in Denver by Kz's lovely friend & family.
Laramie, Wyoming

One of the only vegetarian restaurants in Wyoming and it was closed on July 5th for Independence day observation! Sweet Melissa, I hardly knew you. (213 South First Street)

So, it was off to Mizu Sushi in Laramie for a perfunctory Vegetable Roll. It really hit the spot as I haven't tasted Japanese flavors in some many months. (307 South 3rd Street)

After a particularly grueling 2 hour 4th of July yoga special, we hunkered in for some much needed brunch at Leaf Vegetarian.

French toast, with maple syrup, berry sauce, and earth balance. Dipped in vanilla custard for extra delishness.
Appetizer of Indian inspired empanada, filled with butternut squash and other savory bites.
Experiencing a bout of "food remorse" for ordering such a large portion of something so sweet (french toast), I couldn't help but jump on the opportunity to photograph our dining neighbor's Jamaican Jerk Tempeh, after she exclaimed, "This is so beautiful, I wish I could take a picture!" Layers of rice, tempeh, greens and platain chips.
Denver, Colorado: Watercourse Foods. Here I am enjoying a vanilla milkshake made with local Sweet Action (specializing in two daily vegan flavors).
I was extra excited to visit Watercourse because I have stayed at their vegetarian hostelito in Mexico-Osa Mariposa (<--read about here). The Donna Lee, succulent seitan strips w/ assorted fixins accompanied by sweet potatoes and greens. The housemade bun was a bit crumbly but that seitan was dare I say, phenomenal.

Raw brownie w/ coconut cream. Kz's raw vanilla cheesecake w/ raspberry sauce. Dear Body Cafe, it should be noted on the menu that this brownie was made with carob and not chocolate!
Collard Green Burrito-a delightful combination of nut cheese, beans, and rice with much needed greens.

The next few posts will be devoted to my road trip with food blogger in crime: KZ-Vegan Victual. Our first stop was at Spiral Diner, a 100% Vegan Restaurant about 3 hours north of Austin.

Fort Worth, Texas: Spiral Diner
Tofu Chipotle Daiya Quesadilla w/ guacamole and jalapenos. Pretty dreamy stuff right here. Also Oogave soda, made with agave!
Pitch Perfect Sundae: Housemade vanilla cookies & cream ice-cream, chocolate sauce and whip.
Amarillo, Texas: Eat Rite was one of those health food places that have the feeling of a 1970's timewarp. The place was enormous and immaculate and had a satisfyingly simple salad bar.

Portland Interlude

The Muse-a baked apple stuffed with all sorts of wonderful things including tofu creme fresh. This was from Morninglory Cafe, a place where I would have loved to have eaten, but we just had ramen and the bus was waiting. (450 Willamette Street)
Vegan Power Breakfast from Keystone Cafe, a very hearty combination of tempeh, potatoes, spinach, and nutritional yeast gravy. Wonderful hippie cuisine.
Pizza Research Institute-positively amazing pizza! With chunks of savory sweet tofu and housemade ricotta like cheese. All vegetarian/vegan.
P3 Salad=Potato, Pesto, and Pear with amazing housemade vegan cheese.

Holy Donuts!

I didn't realize what I was getting myself into when visiting my sister in Eugene, Oregon. Not one but two vegan donut options? I thought I could only get Voodoo Doughnuts in Portland but lo and behold they have a new location in Eugene.
Boston Creme Pie, this was eaten in a mere matter of minutes. Slightly less wholesome tasting than Holy Donuts, but in a totally good way.
They have an extensive selection of vegan options, including some studded with cereal and in the shape of the male of the species.
I fell in love with the Banana Fanna from Holy Donuts. Sort of like a Boston Creme but with light & luscious coconut based banana filling. They also have cake like donuts, vegan pie, and gluten-free options.
Holy Donuts! All vegan and mostly organic. My sister and I discussed this extensively and we've reached the conclusion that donuts are more fun to eat than cupcakes. It is probably for the best that I do not live near here as I would be a daily customer.

Monterrey, Mexico

I was really feeling the pull to head south into the verdant hills of Chiapas, but pragmatics got tangled in my net and I continued north, inching my way to Texas via Monterrey (city of Industry) instead of Indigenous Rights (San Cristobal).
Chilequiles *fried up tortilla w/ soya* from La Zanahoria, Ignacio Rayon 932. All veggie, all no frills. I found it peculiar when I asked for coffee and was presented with a cup of hot water and Nescafe (?).
La Casa del Maiz is a charming restaurant specializing in pre-Hispanic corn influenced fare and many meatless options. I had these Tlacoyos-shrouds of maiz filled with potato, soy chorizo, and beans. So good.

Extracting myself from the northernmost bus station in Mexico City was a painful affair. It didn't help matters that my first meal in Monterrey was at Vegetariano Superbom, where the lonesome buffet lacked anything resembling flavor. Again, with Nescafe (!)
